The name Phi Phi is derived from Malay. The original term was Pulao Pi ah Pi, where pulao means “island” in Malay, and Pi, pronounced softly, sounded similar to the English word “bee.” Over time, ah was dropped, resulting in a pronunciation like “Bee Bee.” Later, the “p” sound became more aspirated, evolving into the current pronunciation Phi Phi (Pee Pee). The name originally referred to the mangrove wood found in the area.
